Oaxaca Old Fashioned: A Tequila Twist On Tradition

Oaxaca Old Fashioned

The Oaxaca Old Fashioned cocktail is a twist on the classic Old Fashioned.

The Old Fashioned stands as one of the oldest known cocktails, tracing its roots back to the early 19th century. Originally referred to as a “whiskey cocktail,” it evolved as a simple concoction of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters.

Over the years, the Old Fashioned became a canvas for mixologists to showcase their creativity, leading to various adaptations and reinterpretations.

The Birth of the Oaxaca Old Fashioned:

The Oaxaca Old Fashioned emerged as a modern classic, introducing the smoky and complex notes of mezcal—a spirit deeply rooted in the traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico.

The inception of the mezcal trend in the United States owes a debt to the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. Crafted in 2007 by New York bartender Phil Ward, this innovative concoction served as a gateway for many to the intriguing and earthy world of mezcal—an unfamiliar spirit for most consumers at the time.

Ward unveiled the Oaxaca Old Fashioned at Death & Co., a groundbreaking East Village bar, before featuring it prominently on the menu at Mayahuel, his now-closed establishment located just down the street. This mezcal-infused creation became a landmark in introducing drinkers to the distinctive and complex flavors of this agave-based spirit.

Mezcal’s distinct flavor, derived from roasted agave hearts, adds a layer of complexity to the cocktail, making it a favorite among those seeking a nuanced and spirited drinking experience.
